Giving Opportunities

Restricted and Unrestricted Giving

General Operating Fund Unrestricted funding is used at the discretion of administration, applied to areas that are most in need of financial support. Give now.

Scholarship Funds Because the average tuition cost for a Master's degree is over $25,000, most students apply for financial assistance. Generous scholarships help us attract the top students to CTU. Foundation grants and private donors make it possible for us to offer tuition support, and the Building the Church of the Future Lay Scholarship Initiative launched in November 2009 allows for greater scholarship support to qualified students. Find out more information about specific scholarship programs at CTU. Give now.

Library Funds The Paul Bechtold Library, named in honor of CTU's founding president, contains over 150,000 volumes for scholarly research and other academic pursuits. Nearly 500 periodicals are also available. Although the Bechtold Library houses one of the most focused collections of Roman Catholic literature in the United States, there is an ongoing need to receive additional books and periodicals from prospective donors. Contributions to fund the preservation of older valuable retrospective publications are also needed. Give now.

Faculty Development Funds In the earlier days of CTU, the faculty was comprised predominantly of members of religious orders with religious order faculty contributing over $10 million of their salaries to CTU. As the faculty has grown to include more lay members, CTU is challenged to offer competitive salaries and decrease its dependence on the contributed services of the religious. To meet these goals, CTU seeks to endow a number of professional chairs and distinguished professorships which will alleviate stress on the school's finances. Give now.

Ways to Give to CTU:

Outright Gifts of Cash (Checks, Credit Cards, Securities)
A gift of cash provides CTU with flexible funds that can be used or invested immediately. Cash gifts may also be pledged and paid out over a period of years. Pledges provide security, allowing us to plan on income for a specified period of time. Questions regarding tax consequences can be addressed to our development office. If you would like to give now, please use our secure, online form

Stock Contributions
Thank you for considering a stock contribution to Catholic Theological Union. Please click here to download the document for specific instructions on making a gift. For more information, please call 773.371.5417 or email

Matching Gifts
Check with the personnel office at your place of work for a matching gift form and enclose it with your own contribution.

Gifts of Property
A gift of appreciated securities (such as stocks and bonds) or real estate creates both income tax and capital gains tax savings. Such gifts, which have appreciated in value, permit a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value. Antiques, artwork, jewelry, furniture, furnishings, and similar items are also appreciated as donations.

Wills (Bequests)
Gifts by will are the most popular method of making a deferred gift to charity. Name Catholic Theological Union as a remainder beneficiary of your estate, or make a specific request to support our work. Request information now.

Life Insurance
You can name Catholic Theological Union as the primary beneficiary of your life insurance policy. A donor who wishes immediate tax benefits may wish to consider the irrevocable assignment of an insurance policy to Catholic Theological Union. Questions regarding tax consequences can be addressed to our development office. Request information now.

Charitable Remainder Trusts and Annuities
These are special financial arrangements made between the donor and CTU. A donor transfers property to CTU and in return receives life income benefits. Contact our development office for more information. Request information now.

Special Events
Participate in special events, such as the Romero Del Corazón a la Mesa, the Peacebuilders Initiative Peacebuilding the Future, Tolton's Harambee! event and the annual Blessed are the Peacemakers Trustee Dinner.
