WITNESS TO MANZANAR: The Reality of Forced Removal and Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II

Sr. Joanne Jaruko Doi, MM

About the lecture:

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, setting into motion the detention and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. Maryknoll Sister Joanne Jaruko Doi’s father and grandfather were among those sent to Manzanar, a detention camp in the California desert, while her mother was sent to a detention camp in Heart Mountain, Wyoming.  Sr. Joanne’s talk will explore the ways this family and collective history continues to inform her life and vocation as a Maryknoll Sister, as well as the relevance for our current moment, a time when Executive Orders continue to have profound implications for families and targeted communities on the margins of American society.

EUCHARIST will be held at 4pm, with an art opening and reception to follow.
